Rafting down the Staircase.

4:46 PM, Posted by Unknown, No Comment

At Otter Rafting Adventures, one of the rapids we run on the Red Deer River is called the Staircase. It is a series of drops of different sizes over a short distance. Its lot’s of fun because of the length of time of the continuous action. Also, if at any time you make a mistake in your run down it, you have to quickly pick a new line for the remainder of the ledges. Since every group is different and the water levels are always changing you have several decisions to make at the start of the rapid.

Here is a video from late in the season when the river levels have dropped and you can actually have someone on board with a camera and not paddling. I’ve had to edit it quite a bit so the time the video runs is a fraction of the actual time it takes you to paddle down the Staircase.

You want to be a Rafting Guide?

1:58 PM, Posted by Unknown, No Comment

P1010163This is the time of year when we start looking for people who want to work as a rafting guide. If you’re interested in a full or part time position with Otter Rafting Adventures, than send in your resume as well as a cover letter telling something about yourself that makes you the perfect river guide. We always look for the experienced guides to add to the flock, but in the search we find a few trainees to take on as well. Everyone has to start here – right!

River guides tend to be of a special breed, and there are many relevant jokes in the industry exploiting them. To give you an idea about this job and to figure out if it would be something you would love to do, I found the perfect blog about this position. Check out

Maybe the webpage isn’t quite titled correct (we hire men and women), but it is a good article. If you can relate to this and would love the challenge, send in your resume for the upcoming season.
